SUMMARY:2025 EuCNC & 6G Summit
DESCRIPTION:i2CAT will actively participate in the 2025 EuCNC & 6G Summit\, one of the most prominent European conferences on advanced communications. This annual event brings together global researchers\, industry leaders\, and policy-makers to explore the evolution of 6G and Beyond 5G systems. The summit is supported by the European Commission and major associations like IEEE ComSoc\, EURASIP\, and EurAAP. \nThroughout the week\, i2CAT researchers will present cutting-edge contributions across tutorials\, special sessions\, paper presentations\, and technology demos\, representing flagship Horizon Europe projects such as 6G-XR\, COGNIFOG\, INSTINCT\, iTrust6G\, NANCY\, and BeGREEN. \nTuesday\, 3 June\nHatim Chergui (Software Networks research group)\, representing the COGNIFOG project\, will offer a tutorial presentation on “Explainable AI for Communications and Networking”. The session will explore how XAI frameworks and tools are reshaping transparency and accountability in autonomous network management. With practical use cases in wireless communications\, regulatory discussions around the EU AI Act\, and emerging methodologies like Neuro-symbolic XAI\, the tutorial offers valuable insight into one of the most pressing challenges in intelligent network systems. \nAlso on Tuesday\, Daniel Camps (director of the Mobile Wireless Internet research group) will intervene in a workshop entitled “6G experimentation methodologies\, pitfalls and best practices” to present some of the advances of the 6G-XR project. The talk\, “Exposing CAMARA APIs for third party experimentation in 6G test facilities – the 6GXR approach”\, will describe the south node test site facility based on Ericsson technology developed between i2CAT and 5TONIC. The talk will focus on the tools the project has made available to third-party experimenters\, including a trial controller to onboard third-party experimenters\, CAMARA QoD and edge APIs to enable validation of NaaS APIs in controlled environments\, and a passive KPI measurement system based on Quosium to collect experiment results. \nFinally\, Shuaib Siddiqui (director of the Cybersecurity & DLT-Blockchain research group) will participate in the “6G Trustworthiness: Requirements\, Challenges\, and Considerations” workshop. He will offer a session entitled “Remote Attestation for highly dynamic 6G Systems”\, which highlights advanced approaches to attestation for enhancing trust\, security\, and management in dynamic and distributed systems\, particularly in 6G environments. SUMMARY:Paper Presentation: DQN-Based Intelligent Application Placement with Delay-Priority in Multi MEC Systems
DESCRIPTION:Paper presented by Juan Sebastian Carmargo of Software Networks. \nIn 5G Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) is critical to bring computing and processing closer to users and enable ultra-low latency communications. When instantiating an application\, selecting the MEC host that minimizes the latency but still fulfills the application’s requirements is critical. However\, as future 6G networks are expected to become even more geo-distributed\, and handled by multiple levels of management entities\, this labor becomes extremely difficult and Machine Learning (ML) is meant to be a native part of this process. In this context\, we propose a Reinforcement Learning model that selects the best possible host to instantiate a MEC application\, looking to minimize the end-to-end delay while fulfilling the application requirements. The proposed ML method uses Deep Q-Learning through several stages of environment state\, taking an action and rewarding the model when it chooses correctly and penalizing it otherwise. By modifying the reward incentives\, we have successfully trained a model that chooses the best host possible delay-wise on a multi-level orchestration scenario\, while meeting the applications’ requirements. The results obtained via simulation over a series of MEC scenarios show a success rate of up to 96%\, optimizing the delay in the long term.

SUMMARY:Special Session 1: 5G for CAM in cross-border scenarios: challenges and lessons learnt
DESCRIPTION:To get the CAM (Connected Automated Mobility) services off the ground in Europe the seamless 5G continuity has to be guaranteed and particularly whilst crossing the border between the coverage areas. The ICT-53: 5G for CAM projects (5G-Blueprint\, 5GMED\, 5GRoutes\, 5GRAIL) are focussed on the validation of the latest available 5G specification in the context of innovative CAM applications under realistic conditions and seamlessly functioning across borders from technical (5G network coverage\, 5G performances\, validation of the network coverage in support of the selected use cases)\, business and governance (e.g. national spectrum licence vs harmonized framework in EU for seamless roaming) perspectives. The ongoing activities in ICT-53 projects leverage on the results of the recently concluded ICT-18 Automotive Projects (5G MOBIX\, 5G-CroCo\, 5GCARMEN) in terms of research\, implementation\, and demonstration of refined 5G solutions for CAM. In this special session\, the challenges encountered will be discussed\, along with the applied solutions to overcome them\, and the lessons learned will be outlined. The concept of the session is to have an open discussion where participants will be encouraged to provide their input on these topics. \n  \nFrancisco Vázquez Gallego\, director of the V2X research line at i2CAT\, participates as i2CAT’s representative
